Chapter 88
I gently stroked my stomach and leaned back against the sofa.
For the first time, I felt how big and empty this house was, so quiet it was almost terrifying.
Suddenly, my phone screen lit up with a friend request notification.
I had a strong hunch that the person adding me was Stacy.
And sure enough, as soon as I accepted, she posted a new status on her social media.
[Thank you for staying up so late to decorate our new home for me and the baby. From now on, we'll have a fresh
start.]
The picture she posted showed Stacy's pregnant belly, with a strong, capable hand gently resting on it.
I glanced at the time on my phone.
It was 12:37 a.m. Joey was decorating a new home for his first love on our wedding anniversary.
And throughout the entire day, Joey had completely forgotten about it, not mentioning it even once.
The phone screen reflected my red eyes and the tears constantly welling up in them.
I forced a self-mocking smile and gave Stacy's post a like.
After a while, I didn't wait up for Joey as usual.
I casually put the gift he brought me into the display cabinet, took a shower, and went to bed.
And that gift, I could guess with my eyes closed, was Givenchy's L'INTERDIT, Stacy's favorite perfume...
I had originally thought that with Joey wrapped around Stacy's little finger, he probably wouldn't come home tonight.
But unexpectedly, at three in the morning, the mattress dipped as Joey wrapped his arms around me: "Why did you go to sleep without waiting for me this time?"
I smelled the strong scent of women's perfume on him and my voice turned hoarse: "I was just tired today."
After five years of marriage, this was the first time I had lost my enthusiasm for Joey.
Joey's arms around me stiffened for a moment as he whispered, "Sorry, I forgot about our anniversary because I was too busy yesterday. I'll make it up to you by taking you out for dinner tonight, okay?"
I once craved Joey's tenderness, but now hearing it, there was no flutter in my heart.
All I could think was whether he was also coaxing Stacy like this.

"Okay."
In that instant, I was somewhat grateful for the darkness that could hide my red, sour eyes.
Joey frowned slightly, clearly not used to my coldness: "Have you been in a bad mood lately? Why are you so indifferent?"
Indifferent?
This level of indifference probably still didn't compare to even a tenth of Joey's towards me.
"Maybe I'm just too tired lately," I said wearily, turning over and facing away from Joey. "Let's sleep."
Joey's temper flared for a moment, and he threw off the covers and got up again.
From beginning to end, he didn't see the pregnancy report I had left on the bedside table...
The cold air from the kicked-off covers clenched my heart, and I didn't fall asleep until dawn.
The next day,I got up as usual, exhausted, and went to work.
In the evening, when a colleague asked if I was staying late, I thought of Joey's promise to take me out for dinner and replied, "No."
But as soon as I left the hospital, I got a call from Joey canceling our dinner.
"Sorry, I have to work late at the airline tonight. We'll have to reschedule."
Maybe I'm used to being let down so many times that it doesn't hurt as much anymore.
"Okay," I pressed down the dull pain in my chest and hung up the phone, heading to the nearest supermarket.
I didn't expect that when I was putting the freshly weighed vegetables into my shopping cart, I would hear a
familiar male voice nearby.
"You can't eat lychees when you're pregnant."
I turned my head and saw Stacy and Joey, who had said he would work late.
Joey took the lychees out of Stacy's hand and put them back: "You can eat as many as you want later, but not now."
His voice was cold, but his tone was gentle and indulgent.
And Stacy, pretending to want to eat, obediently let Joey put the lychees back, clearly enjoying being disciplined by
Joey.
She was even so happy that she jumped up and tightly hugged Joey's arm.
"Joey, you're so gentle. You're going to be a great dad!"
My heart ached as I thought of my unborn child...

Would Joey take care of me and discipline me like this if he knew I was pregnant?
At that moment, Stacy suddenly waved at me: "Doctor Bennett, are you here too?"
She came over and warmly took my hand: "I didn't get to thank you for the check- up last time."
Yesterday, Stacy added me on social media and posted a provocative status. Today, she was pretending not to know me here.
I felt a bit uncomfortable and frowned as I pulled my hand away.
I didn't use much force, but Stacy's body suddenly fell backward.
Joey quickly stepped forward to support her and sternly accused me: " Be careful!
Stacy is pregnant!"
My face turned pale in disbelief.
Did he love Stacy so much that he couldn't see through such a low-level trap?
And Stacy was pregnant, but so was I, wasn't I?
I dug my fingernails into my palm: "And you? Didn't you say you were working late?"
Joey's face changed, and a flicker of guilt crossed his dark eyes.
Stacy curved her lips into a fake look of confusion and surprise: "Ah, Joey, so you and Doctor Bermett know each
other?"noveldrama
I looked at Joey.
I saw his eyes dodge, his thin lips pressed tightly together in silence, clearly not planning to reveal our relationship
to Stacy.
I gave a mocking smile, followed by a deeper sense of disappointment: "I don't know him."
Then I pushed my cart away.
What do you think?
