Chapter 586
Wiona was absolutely ecstatic.
She could hardly think straight-she was that happy.
Evelyn was pregnant!
Was she really about to become a grandma?
After Brooks was born, Wiona's health had suffered, and she never managed to have another child, so Brooks had always been her one and only. Now, seeing her friends dote on their grandkids, she couldn't help but feel just a little jealous every time.
She wanted that joy for herself.
Ever since Brooks turned twenty-four, she'd dropped hints-sometimes gentle, sometimes not-so-subtle about settling down. But Brooks always managed to dodge the topic.
When Rosa was still alive, there'd even been talk about Brooks being set up with Evelyn. Back then, Wiona had no idea Evelyn was already involved with Charles, or that they'd had a daughter together.noveldrama
She'd always felt Evelyn's background as a housekeeper's daughter wasn't quite good enough, but since Brooks was open to the idea, she'd gone along with it anyway.
Who could have guessed how complicated things would get?
Once Brooks fell for Evelyn, it was like no other woman existed. He gave up the whole forest for a single tree, and, truthfully, Wiona never thought that tree was all that special.
That resentment lingered, buried deep.
And when she found out about Evelyn's past with Charles, her disapproval only grew. She made things difficult, always opposing them.
But over the last half-year, her feelings towards Evelyn had started to shift. Especially after what happened recently-Evelyn had really started to win her
over.
Her decision to come to the hospital today with homemade food was her own way of waving a white flag.
Now, hearing Evelyn was pregnant, even her last bit of resentment melted away. All she could think about was holding her grandchild.
Gripping the bag of food, Wiona hurried toward the hospital room, buzzing with excitement. On the way, she called Mr. Robinson.
His health had been fragile for three years now. When the family business ran into trouble, he'd fallen ill and never fully bounced back. Through it all, Wiona and Brooks had relied on Mr. Robinson's support.
She was grateful for that—and she knew he was just as eager as she was for a great-grandchild.
As soon as the call connected, Wiona blurted out, "Dad, Brooks is going to have a baby! You're going to be a great-grandpa!"
"That's right, Evelyn is pregnant. I'm at the hospital now. Don't worry-I know, I promise, I won't stand in their way anymore."
She quickly reached the door to the hospital room and hung up.
Inside, Evelyn had just woken up. Hearing Wiona's voice, she tried to sit up.
Brooks squeezed her hand gently, reassuring her to stay put and rest. Then he got up and opened the door.
He filled the doorway-tall, broad-shouldered-and looked at Wiona with a respectful, slightly wary tone. "Mom, what brings you here?"
Evelyn wasn't in the best shape-physically or emotionally-and Brooks didn't want his family to add to her stress.
Wiona shot Brooks a look of mild annoyance. She waved him aside. "Move over- don't block me from seeing Evelyn."
Without waiting for a response, she walked right in.
Brooks had been ready to shield Evelyn, but hearing the warmth in his mother's
voice, he stepped back to watch.
Wiona hurried to Evelyn's bedside.
"Aunt Josephine!" Evelyn greeted, pushing herself up.
Brooks started to help, but Mrs. Robinson was quicker, reaching out to steady Evelyn herself. "Eve, slow down-don't overexert yourself. Be careful with the baby."
Evelyn froze, stunned, and stared at Wiona, wide-eyed.
"I know all about it," Wiona said with
a gentle smile. "When I arrived and you were resting, I asked the doctor. That's when I found out you're expecting."
"Are you feeling okay? Brooks tries his best, but he's still a man-so from now on,
Aunt Josephine will look after you."
"If you have any cravings, just tell me I'll make anything you want.”
Evelyn's pregnancy had Wiona seeing her in a whole new light.
"And about your wedding with Brooks do you want to wait until after the baby is born, or get married soon while you're still in the early
Sths?"
"If you're tired, you two can just go register first..."
"Aunt Josephine won't interfere. It's your choice."
Wiona's face was all smiles as she looked at Evelyn, her eyes drifting more than once to Evelyn's belly.
Her first grandchild was right there.
It took Evelyn a moment to snap out of her shock.
She glanced at Mrs. Robinson, realizing the misunderstanding.
Evelyn hesitated, words caught in her throat.
She knew if Mrs. Robinson found out the baby was Charles's, all of this newfound
warmth would vanish in an instant.
No matter how hard she tried, Mrs. Robinson would never accept her.
But keeping it a secret felt wrong, too.
If the truth ever came out...
Evelyn was completely torn.
What do you think?
