The Heartbreak Prescription

Shaun asked, “Really?”

Halsey nodded. “Really.”

Shaun crouched and spoke to the baby, “You have to be gentle with your mommy.”

The doctor smiled. “You and your wife have such a strong bond.”

Halsey felt a little shy.

The doctor continued, “For a child, a father’s love brings calm to the mother. The calm mother brings peace to the baby, and a peaceful baby means a happy home. When parents love each other, it shapes the child’s whole life. Don’t forget-even though the baby is still inside the mother, it can already feel the love from both parents.”

Halsey glanced at Shaun and suddenly realized he had been staring at her the whole time.

His gaze was deep and intense, making her heart skip a beat. She wasn’t sure what he was thinking.

Before they left, the doctor added, “Make sure to apply plenty of oil on your belly to prevent stretch marks. Besides loving the baby, you have to take care of yourself, too.”

Shaun thanked the doctor, and then looked at Halsey. “Let’s go back.”

They left the doctor’s office and walked together down the hallway.

Halsey stayed quiet for a moment before Shaun finally asked, “Do you think what the doctor said was right?”

Halsey blinked. “The doctor said a lot. Which part do mean?”

Shaun looked at her for a beat, then suddenly said, “Never mind.”

Never mind? What did he want to say?

Halsey started, “What…”

Just then, a nurse rushed down the hall pushing a medical cart. It was moving fast, and the nurse called out anxiously, “Make way, make way!”

The cart was heading straight toward them.

Shaun reacted quickly. He grabbed Halsey’s waist and pulled her into his arms. “Watch out!”

The cart zipped past them, barely missing.

Shaun looked worried. “Are you okay?”

Halsey shook her head. “I’m fine.”

The distance between them closed. Halsey caught Shaun’s fresh, clean scent, and a hint of tension sparked between them.

Halsey looked up to see Elise. She had come to the hospital, too.

Elise watched Shaun holding Halsey, then stepped forward and asked him, “Is this…Mrs. Lane?”

Mrs. Lane?

Halsey immediately sensed the hostility in Elise’s eyes.

Elise, feeling a sense of danger after seeing Halsey being held by Shaun, asked that question as a test. She was probing Halsey’s identity.

Halsey looked at Shaun, quietly waiting to see how he would answer.

Shaun released Halsey and said coldly, “She’s not Mrs. Lane.”

Halsey’s face went pale. “I’m going to the bathroom.”

She turned and left.

In the bathroom, she stood at the sink and splashed cold water on her face. Just then, the door opened.

Halsey wasn’t surprised-she knew Elise would follow her.
