Chapter 4588
Marianne did not know why, but the moment she saw Charlie, all the complaints and blame that she had had in her heart disappeared instantly.
She even felt a little ashamed when Charlie apologized to her.
She felt ashamed because Charlie had come from so far to save Janus, but her father had wanted to take Janus's life merely because he had wanted to preserve his own image and reputation.
What was right and wrong was clear at a glance here.
Charlie had never liked to owe anyone anything. So, when he saw that they were finally speaking up, he felt a lot more relaxed. He then said to Marianne, "Miss Marianne, since this matter has already passed, let's just start anew from now on."
"Okay." Marianne nodded gently. She then remembered that Charlie had spoken to her father about the food street in the afternoon. So, she asked curiously, "Mr.
Wade, why did you suddenly mention the food street to my father in the afternoon? Could it be that he had some other plans related to it?"
"Yes." Charlie said, "Mr. Long wanted to redevelop the place and turn it into a commercial center."
Marianne asked in surprise, "Did he tell you that?"
"Yes." Charlie nodded and said, "He was very excited when he was talking about this. I think he had already made up his mind regarding this matter, so I decided to take this opportunity to get him to hand the food street over to you directly. It's up to you whether you want the food street to stay or go in the future."
Marianne looked at Charlie with a warm expression in her eyes as she asked softly,' Why do you want to do that?"
Charlie casually said, "This food street means a lot to you, and it should be preserved for that very reason. Your father is not short of money at all. In fact, even if the price of the land here has increased a lot, there is no need for him to tear it down and redevelop it."
Having said this, Charlie sighed and
said,' Still, you should know of rich people's mentality. They will never think that they have enough money, and they are always addicted to making more money. So, if I hadn't asked him to do that, I'm afraid that he would really tear this place down. I was afraid that it would not be possible for you to retrieve your memory of this place again if that happened."
Marianne was grateful, and she looked at Charlie and said softly, "Thank you..."
Charlie smiled slightly and said, "You're welcome. I can empathize with your feelings. After my parents passed away, I would often visit the old mansion where we used to live. Sometimes, when I was moving bricks at a construction site far away, I would ride a bicycle to take a look at it after work. I would also have a hard time accepting it if the place were to be demolished."
Marianne asked in surprise, "Mr. Wade, you moved bricks at a construction site before?'noveldrama
Charlie nodded and said, "I started working in various construction sites after graduating from high school at the age of eighteen. I worked on civil engineering sites and even decoration sites for six years."
Marianne was extremely shocked
and puzzled at the same time. "But you have such a prominent family background, so why would you want to work at a construction site? Both your grandfathers are super wealthy, and according to my grandfather, your maternal grandfather could be ranked amongst the top three in the world. Why would you have to go and move bricks at a construction site after graduating from high school, then?"
Charlie said lightly, "Their money is theirs. I told you before that I lived in an orphanage from the age of eight when my parents passed away until I graduated from high school at the age of eighteen. I started working at the construction site after I left the orphanage to make money."
When Marianne heard this, she nodded gently and whispered, "When I was mad at you, I thought that you had lied to me about everything, but looking back now, it seems that you have been telling me the truth. Even though it was a little inconvenient for you to say it to me directly, you only told me selective parts of the truth, and you did not lie to me."
Having said that, Marianne then asked Charlie again, "By the way, how long did you work at the construction site?"
"Four years." Charlie said, "I worked there from the age of eighteen until I was twenty-two years old."
What do you think?
