Chapter 44
By the time Evelyn reached Grant Manor, it was almost 9:00 pm. The evening rush hour had significantly delayed her arrival.
Margaret was pleasantly surprised to see her return.
"Mrs. Grant, you're back! Have you eaten already? Do you need me to prepare something for you to eat?"
"Oh, no need to. I'm just stopping by for a short while," Evelyn responded politely.
"Why are you leaving so soon? Did you... fight with Mr. Grant again?" Margaret grew anxious.
"No." Evelyn opened the shoe cabinet and took out a pair of indoor slippers.
She really didn't fight with him. Lucas wouldn't even bat an eye at her most of the time. His intentional neglect was far more hurtful than losing the spark in a relationship.
Aside from the obligated monthly meetings, they barely interacted with each other, let alone argued.
They had never gotten into a fight. They were just simply getting a divorce.
Margaret had been a housekeeper at Grant Manor ever since they got married. She knew Evelyn's temper pretty well and assumed she was just being stubborn.noveldrama
She couldn't help but try to persuade her. "Mrs. Grant, there's nothing that you both can't resolve. Marriage is all about small fights and eventually making up with each other. You of all people should understand this.
"You clearly still love him, and can't bear to leave him either. How did you two end up like this..."
How would this even end? After all, Margaret was sure that Evelyn would only embarrass herself if she came crawling back.
Evelyn paused, zoning out for a bit.
So this was how everyone saw her from their point of view.
She was one to swallow her pride, never hold grudges, always humbled herself, and did whatever it took to please Lucas without a second thought.
No one would even consider that she could be the one who walked away first.
She pressed her lips together in silence before changing the subject. "Has Lucas been back lately?"
"Not as often," Margaret said with some hesitation.
Evelyn had already expected that answer. "I see. You should get some rest."
Of course, he wasn't coming home. He had been staying with Tiffany this whole time, so why would he come back?
Evelyn went upstairs to the study room. There were two study rooms in this manor -one was Lucas' private room, where she wasn't allowed to set foot in, while the other was an open space where she used to read in her spare time.
For the past three years, she had been keeping up with the times and continuing to learn.
She was familiar with every corner of this place. She was the one who arranged everything on her own, so she could vaguely remember where things were kept.
It didn't take long for her to find the book on the middle shelf.
To make sure she didn't leave anything else behind, she looked around once
more and packed all the books that belonged to her into a box.
Even with such little physical work, she was already feeling exhausted.
Ever since the diagnosis, her terminal illness had left her body weaker than she imagined.
She had to ask Margaret to help her carry the box downstairs. Only then did she realize it was snowing outside.
There was already a layer of snow covering the ground.
It was 10:30 pm when she checked the time.
Margaret went back inside to rest after Evelyn got into her car.
After multiple attempts of trying to start the car, she found herself in a predicament where her car wouldn't start up at all.
She did everything she could, but it simply wouldn't budge.
It seemed like driving home was out of the question.
She checked the time again, it was already 11:00 pm.
The manor was located in an area with vast grounds, so just walking out of the area would take up half an hour. Cabs weren't allowed in there either. On top of that, calling for a ride in weather like this would mean a long wait.
Her brows drew together in frustration. She was already physically drained from all the hassle.
After all the trouble she went through, she decided to stay the night.
It wasn't like Lucas would come back anytime soon, so she wouldn't need to worry about seeing him.
Evelyn went back upstairs.
She wasn't planning to sleep in the master bedroom and went straight to the guest room instead.
After taking a shower, she realized she forgot to bring a change of clothes to the bathroom. Wrapped in a towel, she went to the master bedroom's closet to find the clothes she left behind.
Fortunately, since Lucas rarely came back, he never bothered to ask Margaret to throw out her wardrobe.
She grabbed her clothes and was about to head back out.
However, the door was abruptly pushed open from the outside, startling her in the process.
Standing on the other side of the door was Lucas with his coat draped over his
arm.
He wasn't surprised or shocked when he saw Evelyn. He knew she couldn't resist coming back.
His gaze lightly swept over her body wrapped in a towel before he walked inside as if nothing had happened. As he passed by her, she caught a familiar scent of the perfume again.
Its presence was so overwhelming that it felt like a silent assertion of dominance.
Lucas was always too consumed by work to spend time with her. But when it came to Tiffany, he suddenly had all the time in the world, no matter how busy he
was.
Evelyn felt extremely uncomfortable. She wanted to explain why she was there. "Sorry, I was going to—"
He set his coat down and glanced at her again, his eyes lingering on the towel wrapped around her. Her fair shoulders and neck were bare, and her slender legs drew his attention.
He cut her off and said coldly, "I'm not in the mood."
