Chapter 917
Chapter 917:
Hadley was taken aback. “We’re in the city. What fireworks are you talking about?”
Setting off fireworks was not allowed in the city, even on a night like this.
“Don’t worry.” Eric reassured her with a calm smile. “I’ve set everything up. Joy will get to see the fireworks.” He then quietly went into Joy’s room.
There she was, stretched out on the bed like a little frog, deeply asleep. Eric gently bent down and scooped Joy up, cradling her carefully in his arms.
Joy pouted as she nestled into a comfortable spot and kept sleeping, undisturbed by the movement.
As they left the room, Eric motioned to Hadley, whispering, “Draw the curtains open and turn off the main lights.”
“Okay.” Hadley was puzzled but followed his instructions.
Eric glanced at the clock on the wall. It was perfect timing. He looked at Joy in his arms.noveldrama
“Should we wake her?” He paused, but then decided. “No, better not.”
Just then, the night outside suddenly lit up.
“Hadley, look!”
Hadley looked up sharply, seeing fireworks bursting into patterns of trees and flowers.
But an even bigger surprise came next. The following set of lights sparkled clearly in the shape of Joy’s name.
“What are you waiting for? Hurry up and take a photo. Joy should see this when she wakes up. I fulfilled my promise.”
“Okay!” Hadley quickly grabbed her phone and began filming. The bright flashes lit up her face. Eric, holding Joy, smiled softly.
“Hadley, merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas.” Hadley tilted her face slightly to look at him.
Suddenly, Eric leaned in and placed his head on Hadley’s shoulder.
“Eric,” Hadley said sharply, frowning as she tried to push him away. “Come on, move away!”
But then, Eric fell heavily to the floor, still holding Joy tightly, protecting her.
“Eric!” Hadley’s voice caught in her throat, her thoughts scattering as she dropped to one knee, swiftly pulling Joy into her embrace before spinning to check on Eric.
Joy trembled in her arms, her small face crumpling as tears threatened to spill.
“Shh, it’s alright, Joy. Mommy’s got you,” Hadley murmured, calming her daughter first.
“What happened?” Melba’s voice rang out as she stepped from her room, flipping on the light after hearing the clamor.
“Melba, perfect timing!” Hadley said urgently, passing Joy into her arms.
It was then Melba spotted Eric sprawled on the floor.
“Mr. Flynn? What happened to him?” she gasped, startled.
Hadley didn’t pause to explain. She crouched beside Eric, lightly tapping his face and shoulders. “Eric, come on, wake up! Can you hear me?”
His breathing was steady, his pulse detectable, but his skin was ghostly pale.
Uncertain of his injuries, she hesitated to shift him.
Taking a steadying breath, she fought to keep her composure. She grabbed her phone and dialed the hospital. “Hi, we need medical help here at Millland Road.”
