Chapter 1209
Chapter 1209:
Milford frantically apologized again and again. He knew he had to be careful. This nightclub wasn’t an ordinary place—it was a venue where influential figures often frequented. A single misstep could lead to serious trouble.
“Milford Murray!” Suddenly, a stern voice echoed from inside the nightclub. A man in a suit without a tie, his hair slicked back with gel, hurried over and offered Presley a conciliatory smile.
“Apologies,” the man said. “He’s one of my employees, here to collect his wages. Please forgive him.” He seemed familiar with Milford’s last name.
Presley took a closer look at Milford, recalling his accent from earlier. “Are you from Wist Land?” she asked.
“Indeed, Miss,” Milford responded.
“And what brings you here?” Presley inquired.
Milford, however, fell silent.
Presley, who had shown a fierce demeanor moments ago, now seemed oddly amiable. Milford feared she might harbor ill intentions toward him.
“He’s simply an orphan who grew up without a home. Currently, he works for me and is quite a diligent worker,” the man said, speaking on Milford’s behalf.
Presley seemed to understand something at that moment.
She said, “Then move aside. I have urgent matters to attend to.” She carefully maneuvered to avoid any contact with the two men as she walked away.
“Mr. Navarro, I apologize for causing you trouble,” Milford said, addressing Barry Navarro, his boss and the foreman at the construction site.
Barry clapped him on the shoulder reassuringly. “It’s fine. I’m here to support you whenever needed. However, you must avoid such situations in the future. If you encounter someone less forgiving, things might not go so smoothly. Now, let’s get you your salary.” Barry led Milford to a temporary bar room inside the nightclub, a place that lacked surveillance.
“Here’s your pay for the last three days—one thousand dollars,” Barry said, handing him the cash.
Milford pocketed the money promptly, without even counting it. Barry then added, “How about I pay you your entire month’s salary upfront instead of paying you every three days? That way, you won’t always be short of what you need.”
Having only worked at the construction site for half a month and with little money, Milford had been asking Barry to receive his wages every three days just to survive. However, as a lower-level manager, Barry seldom had the chance to visit the site. Milford could only find him at the nightclub, where Barry frequently socialized with the owner.
Still shaken from yesterday’s events, Milford quickly declined the offer. “It’s okay. I’ll stick to the regular payment schedule. I’ve just managed to get through the tough times. This money should last me until next month. There’s no need to trouble you further.”
“Don’t be so formal,” Barry replied, trying to hand Milford more money. “You saved Lisa, and I promised I would take good care of you.”
“No, thanks. You really don’t have to do that,” Milford said, pushing the money back. “I’ll just squander it if you give it to me now. It’s better if you help me in another way.”
Barry looked at Milford with suspicion. “Have you done something illegal? If so, I’ll give you some money, but you need to leave here right now!”
