Dinner was a tense affair, with Stella and Leyla pointedly ignoring each other.

Once dinner was over, Eileen packed up some ingredients from the fridge for Bailee and Huey, ensuring they had enough to eat for the next few days.

With a determined glint in her eye, Eileen took Gabriela upstairs, ready to begin the delicate negotiation.

“Sweetheart,” Eileen began gently, settling onto the bed. “It’s really not safe for a little girl like you to be carrying around so much cash. If the wrong people see it, they might try to take it from you.”

Gabriela paused, her little brow furrowed. Then, she said, “It’s okay. I have Daddy by my side! I’m not scared.”

Eileen nodded. “I know, sweetie, but your Daddy can’t be with you every second of every day. What if you go out with Grandma or others? They wouldn’t be able to fight off any bad guys, would they?”

Gabriela’s face took on a serious expression. “I’ll leave the purse at home then. That way, nobody will even know about my money.”

Eileen was briefly at a loss for words.

She almost wanted to say, “If you leave it at home, I will take it.” After a pause, she said gently, “I think it’s unsafe to keep so much cash at home. What if someone enters through a window when no one is around and steals it? If you carry it around, you might lose it. If you leave it at home, it could still be stolen.”

Gabriela gripped her purse tightly, her gaze fixed on Eileen. After a moment, she asked, “What should I do then?”

“I believe it’s safest if I hold onto it for you,” Eileen quickly said.

Gabriela’s expression turned grave. She eyed Eileen warily, utterly convinced that once the money was in Eileen’s possession, she would never see it again!

She was doubtful that Eileen would actually deposit the money. Gabriela’s deep mistrust of her own mother at such a young age left Eileen feeling resigned.

“You are my daughter. Eventually, all my assets will go to you and your younger sister. So, it doesn’t really matter whether I deposit this money or not. It will all be yours one day. What are you worried about?” Eileen tried to explain. “You must understand, you were brought into this world by me. Why would I covet such a small amount of your money?”
