Chapter 690 One Last Time
Emma lay on the infirmary bed, the light in her eyes slowly fading away. She was alive, but there wasn't a shred of hope in her life. Even death had become a
luxury she could no longer reach for.
A life worse than death was truly despairing.
Tears streamed down her cheeks. She had clung to the hope and belief that Charlotte and William, who had raised her, wouldn't abandon her so heartlessly. But this final meeting made her realize the truth. To them, she was nothing at all. "Emma Meloney, you'll be heading back soon. When you return, focus on yourself. Stop trying to use suicide to attract attention," the prison warden said.
He looked at her with impatience in his eyes. "I've seen too many people like you. People who don't have a conscience. There's no way of changing it. People like you belong in prison, where you'll spend the rest of your life repenting."
The warden was a righteous person. He was scolding Emma because of personal reasons. He had a daughter that was the same age as Sophia. However, she was killed at 18 in an act of revenge.
Sophia's incident reminded him of his daughter, so he had no sympathy for Emma, who was the mastermind behind it all. If it weren't against regulations, he would've let Emma commit suicide.
Even inside prison, Emma often received "special treatment" from her fellow inmates. Everyone knew what was going on, but they turned a blind eye.
After all, someone had instructed them to make sure Emma would be taken care of inside prison. As for who gave those instructions, everyone knew, but no one said a word.
Emma looked at the warden, her face pale and her eyes bloodshot. After a while, she nodded and replied, "You're right. Someone like me doesn't deserve to live. No one in this world loves me, so what's the point of staying alive?"
The warden spat at her without hesitation. "Your heart is as dark as coal, yet you dare blame other people.
"People like you only bring death and suffering to those who care about you. Staying away from you is the only way anyone can survive."
"Is that so?" Emma stared at the warden blankly. "Do people who truly love me die?"
"Sky Walker had a promising future, but you ruined it," the warden sneered. "But since staying away from you, he's turned things around. He's even earned several reduced sentences.
"He'll be out of prison soon. If it weren't for you, he would've never ended up with a stain like this on his record. Emma, even now, you show no remorse. You never reflect on yourself and only blame others. People like you are the most terrifying of all."
Emma froze. Her mind was already in chaos, unable to think clearly.
The only thing she heard was the warden saying that Sky had earned sentence reductions and that he might be out of prison soon.
The Walkers had the power to get Sky released if they wanted to. Back then, they said they wouldn't save Sky. But now, they helped him and completely ignored her.
The warden saw right through her thoughts and said, "You must be thinking that the Walkers had done something. But in reality, Sky earned it himself.
"In prison, he used his skills to help the authorities crack several major fraud cases. He even managed to talk a crime leader into confessing every crime he had committed.
"If Sky didn't try to help himself, the Walkers would've ignored him. So Emma, when something happens, try asking yourself what you did wrong, instead of always blaming others for not loving you."
Emma fell silent. She hadn't expected that even in prison, Sky was that capable.
After a long pause, she finally spoke, her face pale. "Warden, can I meet Sky? I promise. After seeing my brother, behave and be a good person After all, I'm never getting out. You let me meet with Mrs. Walker, I'm sure you can let me see him too."
By the time she finished, she didn't dare call Sky her brother anymore. That was because she noticed the contempt and disgust in the warden's eyes.
"Wait here." The warden turned and left. He made a few calls and pulled some strings. In the end, after getting a response from Sky in the men's prison, he agreed to let them meet.
The warden wasn't doing this for Emma's sake. He just wanted some peace. Her constant suicide attempts were just adding to their workload. If she would settle down and behave after meeting Sky, it would be worth it.
Two hours later, Sky appeared in the infirmary where Emma was. He had a buzz
cut and was wearing the standard prison uniform. He looked calm as he sat by the bed.noveldrama
"I heard you wanted to see me." He spoke up first.
"Sky..." The moment she opened her mouth, tears fell uncontrollably.
Sky let out a sigh and picked up a tissue from the table. "Emma, don't cry."
"Sky, do you hate me?" Emma took the tissue and dabbed at her tears, sobbing as she spoke. "Sky, I'm so sorry. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have ended up like this."
"Emma, I don't blame you, nor do I hate you. Even though we're not related by blood, I practically raised you. I'm partly responsible for what you've done. That's why I'm here in prison. Serving my sentence and reforming myself. That's what I deserved."
He stared at Emma calmly. His head was now clear, and he had calmed down considerably.
"Emma, people have to go through certain things to really understand right from wrong. I've made mistakes, and I've paid the price.
"I don't blame anyone else. If I must blame someone, I blame myself. But fortunately, I have a chance to start over.
"As long as I repent, correct my mistakes, and make amends, it's not too late. Emma, you have to work hard and stop placing your hopes in others.
"You want love, but first, you have to learn how to love yourself. You can't hurt innocent people just because you want others to love you. It took me a long time to learn this lesson.
"Emma, you wanted to see me, and that's why I came. But after this, let's not meet ever again. This is the last time I'll ever answer your call."
